Morgan restoration

All Morgans are hand built cars and are frequently tailored to individual needs. The bodywork is hand built and finished at the factory and restoration therefore requires skilled panel work and plenty of experience to achieve the correct lines and panel fit.

Techniques has won many plaudits for its many and varied restorations.

Our restorations can be tailored to your needs, be it a simple chassis change or a more comprehensive rebuild. We can include specification upgrades if required or a total ‘nut and bolt’ rebuild to your Morgan’s original specification.

Our enthusiasm and skills have led to many interesting and unique Morgans being entrusted to Techniques. No challenge is too great!

1969 Morgan +8

Early Moss box +8s are becoming increasingly desirable, in particular for historic racing. This +8 came to us in drivable condition but once stripped down the true extent of its hard life became evident. We started with a new chassis, then came a new body frame and finally new wings, all sourced from the Morgan factory.

With the aim of historic racing in mind, we were able to apply many ‘Techniques tweaks’ during the build. The car was finished in two-tone blue and went on to make a glorious international debut at Spa where it finished 4th overall and first Morgan home.

1939 Morgan 4-4 Le Mans

We never thought that we would see the actual car that raced at Le Mans in 1939 (following on from our painstaking 4-4 Le Mans Recreation) - but resting in a barn in the USA was FXD 280, the long lost Le Mans race car. It had been disassembled but its unique Le Mans features were still evident.

Back at Techniques workshop, the steel panels were carefully peeled away from the ash frame which, we found, was in remarkably good condition. New ash wood was carefully grafted in and the steel panels reattached. The bodywork was 'lead loaded' and repainted in its original green. The large fuel tank had survived and this was carefully dismantled and foam filled. Meanwhile, the engine, gearbox and axle were stripped and rebuilt.

The refurbished and replacement instruments are all fitted to the original dashboard; that required minor repairs. The original bonnets also survived and after careful restoration, replacement hinge and more lead! they now look as good as ‘way back when’!

The restoration/rebuild of this car has been extremely challenging, but we are very proud that it was ready in time for its international debut at the 2010 Le Mans Classic.

The journey back to Le Mans for ‘FXD’ was completed over the weekend of 10th July 2010 at Le Mans Classic 24hr. It was a huge success, finishing 21st from a total of 68 entrants and 6th on Index of Performance (Handicap). Drivers Leigh Sebba, Tony Lees and Richard Plant drove superbly to cross the finishing line without any problems.

Morgan +4+

This gorgeous +4+ came to us from an enthusiastic customer. The car had not moved for many years and at some point in its history had the misfortune to have been rolled onto its roof.

We were entrusted to overhaul the chassis and mechanicals and return the car to its original Oxford blue colour. To complete the car, we fabricated the unique intake grills before we delivered it back to our delighted customer. Remarkably, we maintain three Morgan +4+ from a total production run of 26!!

Morgan +4 SuperSports

This very rare car is one of 7 known genuine Morgan +4 SuperSports in the UK . It has been campaigned by our customer in the Morgan Motor Company Challenge Race series and other historic events since 1995. Following an ‘off’ at Silverstone we were asked to fully restore this car as sympathetically as possible, keeping in mind that the car had to remain competitive.

We have completed a nut and bolt rebuild retaining the SuperSports unique features of all lightweight aluminium bodywork, remote header tank, twin Weber 42DCOE carburettors and special inlet and exhaust manifolds. The car was painted in its original cellulose indigo blue and completed with a new Le Mans type hardtop.

Morgan 4/4 4 Seater

We were delighted to help our customer ready this much loved Morgan for a new life in the USA. Having collected the car from its years of hibernation in a lock up garage, we were asked to bring the car back to life whilst retaining as much of the car’s originality as possible.

The first step was to replace the chassis and then modify the engine valves to run on unleaded fuel. Throughout the rebuild, the customer remained in the USA. We were able to email photos of each stage of the rebuild to him.

The completed car was shipped to the USA and was immediately tested with a 1500 mile journey over the Rocky mountains to our customer’s home in Colorado. The car arrived safely without missing a beat. To read more about this extraordinary adventure please see Miscellany Jan 2005.

Morgan +8

This 1982 Morgan +8 had received no major work in its 20 odd year history and is perhaps typical for an untouched car of this vintage. We were able to repair the body frame, fit new wings and paint the car in a deep lustrous maroon. The car was finally trimmed and returned to a very happy owner.

Morgan 4-4 Le Mans Recreation

This was not for the faint hearted. Our brief was to recreate the unique 1939 Morgan 4-4 Le Mans car to enable our customer to compete at the prestigious Le Mans Classic. Our starting point? A 1938 Morgan 4-4 delivered to us in a number of boxes!! This really was a nut and bolt rebuild and at times we felt we were even having to make 1938 nuts and bolts!!

We completed the car in sufficient time to go testing and on to a glorious finish at the Le Mans Classic 2002. The car has since completed races all over Europe and was back at the Le Mans Classic in 2004 only to be denied a class win by a very rapid Riley Brooklands.
