Morgan Racing – Safety Requirements and Performance Parts

 

A Morgan is a very quick sports car combining lightweight design, sure handling and a range of powerful engines. With very little expense and effort, a road car can be developed into a race car taking part in contemporary or historic championships. Morgan’s also make excellent track day cars. We list below the parts required to take your car racing. Those parts that are mandatory are highlighted.

Roll Over Bars – Mandatory

A Roll Over Bar is mandatory for most racing Morgans. We can supply and fit Roll Over Bars or full racing ‘cages’ according to MSA and FIA regulations.

Scuttle Roll Bars

Our scuttle roll bars are built to the same quality and specification as our Roll Over Bars. Positioned under the scuttle, they add rigidity and strength creating an improved ‘survival cell’ in the event of an accident.

Race Harnesses – Mandatory

A correctly fitted full race harness may save your life as well as keeping you secure in the car at racing speeds. Race harnesses are mandatory and now need to have a minimum belt width of 3 inch. We can supply 4/5 and 6 point belt harnesses in a range of colours from leading manufacturers together with suitable fixings, mounted securely to the vehicles chassis.

Race Seats

A correctly installed race seat tailored to the drivers needs is often the most noticed improvement by a Race driver and can be measured by quicker lap times. With the restrictions on space between the chassis rails, we have found that very few commercially available race seats will fit. We can supply and fit the few models of race seat that do fit together with all the fixings.

Fire Extinguishers – Mandatory

For all post 1965 Morgans, a plumbed in fire extinguisher is now mandatory. We fit our extinguisher systems either in the passenger footwell or under the rear parcel shelf. All have to be activated remotely and are electrically or mechanically operated.

Cut Out Switches – Mandatory

A remote switch to isolate all electrics (except the fire extinguisher) in an emergency is mandatory for racing Morgans. We can supply a range of mechanical or electrical switches suitable for positioning on the rear panel, dashboard or scuttle.

Red Rear Warning Light – Mandatory

Under poor visibility, it is mandatory for cars to show a bright red, rear warning light. We can supply the latest LED lights which can be simply affixed either to the roll bar or rear panel.

Door Bars

These are fitted between the Scuttle Roll Bar and the Roll Over Bar. They provide side impact protection and effectively increase the rigidity of the chassis. These need to be tailored to fit your car.

Race Decals and Roundalls – Mandatory

You will need to fix decals to your car indicating to the race marshals where the electrical cut out switch and fire extinguisher switch are located. In addition, the location of towing hooks also needs to be highlighted. If you are new to racing, a black cross on a yellow background must be shown on the rear of your car. We can supply all the decals you need together with roundalls and sets of numbers.

Catch Tanks – Mandatory

All engine fluids must be retained and not allowed to spill onto the race track. Oil lost through crank case breathers, must be collected in a catch tank. Whereas these can be simply an old oil can strapped to the inner wing!, we have designed and produced catch tanks made from aluminium with a sight tube and drain tap. Please call for prices.
 

Brake Conversion Kits

We can supply and fit 4 pot brake calliper conversion kits for the front brakes and 2 pot calliper kits for the rears brakes. A range of uprated ventilated and drilled disks are also available with the callipers. It is important to check the regulations of your series before fitting these kits to understand what is and isn’t permissable.

Uprated Brake Fluid

We recommend ‘Castrol SRF’ racing brake fluid for our race cars. Specially formulated for racing conditions, SRF has a higher boiling point and gives a more consistent brake pedal.

Uprated Brake Shoes and Pads

Our Racing brake shoes and pads produce higher friction between pad and disk/drum and withstand higher temperature, reducing brake fade under race conditions. We would strongly recommend them to all our race customers.
 

Brake Conversion Kit
Ventilated Rear Drum Brakes

Our Afin aluminium rear drums brakes are a direct replacement for the standard drum on all Morgan models. They improve the dissipation of heat and thus reduce brake fade.

Dual Circuit Brakes

Should the unthinkable happen, then you don’t want to be without any brakes! Dual circuit brakes can be fitted to all Morgan’s ensuring that you will always be able to slow your car down. We supply dual master cylinder kits and all the associated fittings to equip your car to race safely.
 

Afin Rear Drum Brakes
Stainless Steel Braided Brake Hose

We replace the standard rubber brake hoses with high quality stainless steel braided hoses. These give a firmer brake pedal and are much better protected for racing purposes.

Oil Coolers

Available in 13, 16 and 19 row sizes, and suitable for all models of Morgans. Made from aluminium and designed to fit your Morgan either with or without one of our front valances.
 

Tachometers

Don’t rely on the mechanical tachometers as supplied on older Morgans. They are notoriously inaccurate. Better to fit one of the more modern electronic instruments, all sizes and leading names available.

Steering Wheels

With the sizeable bolstering of modern race seats, it can make it difficult to get into the car!! We can supply detachable steering wheels to overcome this problem.

Anti Tramp Bars

Morgans have a habit of ‘tramping’ under hard acceleration off the start line. An anti tramp bar can be fitted to the rear axle and helps minimise this effect.

Panhard Rods

We supply panhard rod kits suitable for all models of Morgan. A panhard rod will help locate the axle when cornering hard making your Morgan handle better.

Brake Reaction Bars

These bars are fitted between the top of the front frame and the chassis, effectively steadying the front frame under severe braking. Our bars can be fitted to all models of Morgan.

Uprated Springs

Stronger springs can be fitted to the front of the car to reduce roll. A range of springs are available so please contact us with your car details.

Adjustable Shock Absorbers

We supply adjustable shock absorbers from the leading makers AVO, SPAX and Koni. Please contact us for more details.

Lowering Blocks

Lowering the centre of gravity will improve the handling of your Morgan. We fit lowering blocks to the rear axle and shorter front springs. Both are available from Techniques.
 

Aero Screens

A Morgan is not the most aerodynamic design for a racing car! The large flat windscreen greatly increases wind resistance. A fitted hard top and side screens improves the drag coefficient but better still, remove the screen and fit an aero screen. We supply aero screens and pedestals for mounting on the scuttle.

Front Valance

The drag can be further improved by fitting a front valance. We can supply a classic design of valance made from aluminium as fitted to Morgan +4s in the 1960s or a more contemporary valance made from glass fibre as fitted to some of the leading Morgan +8s.

Alloy Fuel Tanks and Radiators

We have produced alloy fuel tanks and radiators to our own design reducing dry weight, and in the case of our radiators, improving the cooling efficiency of your engine. Suitable for all Morgan models, please contact us for more details.

Small Alternators and Starter Motors

Whilst considering weight reduction, Morgan starter motors and alternators are hefty items. We offer direct replacements with smaller lighter units for all Morgan models.
 

Alloy Fuel Tank
Exhaust Manifolds / Systems

We can improve the breathing of your Morgan engine with our purpose built free flowing exhaust systems. Made from stainless steel, you can choose from repackable silencers, side or rear exit pipes and single or twin pipe systems depending on the Morgan model.

Air Filters

We recommend ‘cotton filter’ performance air filters for all Morgan models. Please enquire for details.
 

Rear Spare Wheel Covers

The finishing touch for your racing Morgan is to fit our aluminium spare wheel cover. These can be supplied with or without louvres.
